Todos deben recordar la famosa trilogía de Volver al Futuro, película de ciencia ficción producida por Steven Spielberg en los 80s, donde nos cuenta la historia de un adolescente, Marty McFly, que mediante un auto DeLorean, adaptada por el Dr. Emmett Brown, logra viajar a través del tiempo. En la película el “Doc Brown” nos explica que viajar en el tiempo puede causar la creación de realidades alternas por una modificación de un evento del pasado y en la cual podemos tener una vida paralela en cada realidad alterna.

Es decir, que siempre que viajemos en el tiempo se creará una divergencia en la realidad en la cual demos con la extraña casualidad de que en todas las realidades alternativas en las que viajemos tengamos un doble igual a nosotros. Esto puede parecer algo sumamente ficticio, pero el mundo de la física nos da una teoría de que esto pueda ser posible. La famosa teoría de cuerdas postula que las partículas elementales son en realidad como minúsculas cuerdas que vibran y esta pretende cumplir el objetivo inconcluso de Albert Einstein: unificar la teoría de la relatividad y la teoría cuántica. Por lo que la teoría de cuerdas también es denominada la Teoría del Todo.

La visión final que desarrolló el físico Stephen Hawking en sus últimos meses antes de morir y que se publicó en la revista Journal of High Energy Physics nos dice: “nuestro universo es uno entre muchos. Pero el número total de universos es finito. Y los múltiples universos existentes son similares entre ellos”, y que se fundamenta en la teoría de cuerdas de la física y en el concepto de multiverso que postula que existen múltiples universos.

Sea una ficción o una teoría científica, parece ser que los mundos paralelos se originan por las diferentes posibles decisiones tomadas y aplicar este pensamiento en las finanzas pueden servir de mucho en la gestión del presente.

Cuando nos preguntamos ¿y si hubiese…? nos da una idea de las diferentes realidades que pueden existir. ¿y si hubiese estudiado publicidad y no contabilidad? ¿y si hubiese aceptado aquel trabajo? Tal vez en una realidad alterna es un gran publicista o labora en aquel trabajo rechazado. Nunca lo sabremos, pero en el mundo financiero hacerse esta pregunta puede llevarnos a gestionar diferentes resultados y tener en cuenta sus posibles repercusiones. El pasado no se puede gestionar, es un costo hundido, sólo se puede aprender de él, y la gestión financiera pasa por tratar de predecir escenarios futuros preguntándonos ¿y qué pasaría si…? creando posibles “mundos paralelos” de un modelo económico.

Proyectar diferentes escenarios en la gestión empresarial nos ayuda a medir los efectos financieros de una decisión para establecer probabilidades y ser lo más prudentes posibles al momento de tomar decisiones sin caer en la exageración de un pensamiento pesimista u optimista. Hacer flujos es el DeLorean en las finanzas y colocar escenarios nos ayudará a decidir hoy el mejor destino para el futuro.
